Cortisone Injections do not treat the root cause of your pain, but are considered to be a powerful anti-inflammatory medication. When inflammation is an underlying problem in your condition, cortisone injections may be included as a potent therapy for pain relief. It is important to note, however, that cortisone will not slow the progression of osteoarthritis nor will it heal the cause of your pain whether from a sports injury or otherwise. It is meant to be a Band-Aid for the pain. Although usually very effective at treating pain the first time, cortisone has the tendency to not control pain as well with repeated use. Cortisone can also cause further deterioration of the joint with repeated use, so it is generally recommended to limit cortisone injections to 3-4 times a year on an as-needed basis. That doesn't mean that it can't be a significant help or that you should avoid it, because it can be a wonderful pain-relief option between treatments.
